Participatory maize variety evaluation for WUE


The goal of this project is to enhance maize productivity through improved water management technologies. To do this we are developing efficient water management techniques in irrigated Maize – based farming systems. The specific project objectives are to use participatory evaluation to assess 14 released maize varieties for water use efficiency for smallholder farmers’ use in irrigated agriculture in Malawi. Two irrigation regimes, full and alternative furrow irrigation, will be tested on all 14 maize varieties. Data will be collected starting three weeks after planting and continuing every 3 weeks until physiological maturity.

Chlorophyll content (SPAD) I

REQUIREMENTS: Firmware v0.38 or lower (used for older devices which do not have a SPAD calibration, generally device ID 87 and lower).Measures transmission at 940nm and 650nm in order to determine the 'greenness' of a leaf, an indicator of chlorophyll content and nitrogen content. The 940 is used to account for leaf thickness.
