Acer Leaf Location 9 Fall 2016


This study is being conducted because we want to better understand the relationship between sunlight and the recorded factors. The rationale for doing this study is because light access is likely to vary around the tree and effect the leaves. In Fall 2016, how are photosynthetic efficiency, LEF, phiNPQt and chlorophyll content effected by leaf location in canopy (inner vs. outer leaves) in Acer rubrum trees. We will be analyzing the trees on the northern region of campus with the tree codes listed 2007024002, 2007024003 and 20070241*06. As a group we will be collectively recording 120 samples two times per week until we reach the sum of 1440. The three A. Rubrum trees will be measured by each region of canopy collecting 40 samples for each tree, 10 samples per region or quadrant (5 inner, 5 outer).

Canopy position is predictive of access to sunlight; therefore there will be a relationship between leaf position/ sunlight access to photosynthetic efficiency, LEF, phiNPQ, and chlorophyll content. Studying the effects of sunlight in relation to canopy position of leaves, can assist us in creating a greater understanding of the health of leaves studied.

In this field of study we are able to record and recognize similarities and differences amongst biological replicate, A. Rubrum trees. In studying the inner and outer leaves of A. Rubrum Trees for each quadrant (5 inner, 5 outer) over the course of the fall 2016 semester can lead us to contributing to a body of research about the health and maintenance of leaves in Acer Rubrum trees. In analyzing all the recording (1440) over the semester long research, we can add to a broader group of data that will increase the understanding on how light access on leaf location can affect the health of leaves in A. Rubrum trees.
