Dave is world-leading expert in bioenergetics of photosynthesis. His research aims to understand how the biophysical and biochemical machinery of photosynthetic works in living systems, how it powers and shapes life, and how it might be altered to increase productivity in a changing environment. To approach this aim, his lab has invented and developed a series of high-resolution and high-throughput spectroscopic tools to characterization photosynthetic processes as they occur in vivo.  Recently, his work led to the establishment of MSU’s Center for Advanced Algal and Plant Phenotyping (CAAPP), a large-scale multi-disciplinary and multi-user facility to phenotype photosynthetic processes under natural environmental conditions.  He is also co-founder of PhotosynQ.org, a project to establish a network of sophisticated scientific instruments and analytical tools to understand photosynthesis and plant productivity around the globe.


Dave received Ph.D. in Biophysics from U. Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (With Antony Crofts), followed by post-docs at the Institute de Biologie Physico-Chimique, Paris (with Pierre Joliot) and U., Freiburg, Germany (with Wolfgang Nitschke). He was a faculty member at the Institute for Biological Chemistry at Washington State University (1996-2010) and recently became the Hannah Distinguished Professor at the MSU-DOE Plant Research Lab at Michigan State University.
